Air Pump Heat Installation

Monthly Costs of Running a Heat Pump

Monthly Costs of Running a Heat Pump

Running costs are the first question most homeowners ask us, and it is a fair one. Moving to a heat pump shifts your heating from gas to electricity, so the figure on your bill looks different from what you are used to seeing. Here is a straight answer based on the systems we design and install across Southeast London.

What Does a Heat Pump Cost to Run Each Month?

Most of the homes we work with spend somewhere between £30 and £90 a month on average across the year. Using the electricity unit rate of 26.32p per kWh set by Ofgem for October to December 2026, a rough guide looks like this:

Small Home (50 to 80 m²)
£30 – £45 / month
Medium Home (80 to 110 m²)
£50 – £65 / month
Large Home (110 to 180 m²)
£70 – £90 / month

Note: These are annual averages rather than fixed monthly bills. What you actually pay depends on your insulation, the temperature you keep your home at, and the electricity tariff you are on.

Why Do Monthly Running Costs Change?

A heat pump does not cost the same every month:

  • Winter Peaks (Jan–Feb): Outside temperatures drop, and the system works harder, pushing costs well above the yearly average.
  • Summer Lows (Jun–Aug): The unit is usually only producing hot water, causing monthly running costs to fall sharply.

Tip: If you pay your supplier by direct debit, this gets spread across twelve months, which evens out the winter peaks.

What Affects Monthly Costs Most?

  • System efficiency: Our systems target a 400% SCOP, which means roughly four units of heat for every unit of electricity drawn.
  • Insulation: Loft and cavity wall insulation cut how much heat your home needs in the first place.
  • Flow temperature: Correctly sized radiators or underfloor heating let the system run at lower flow temperatures, which is where the savings come from.
  • Your tariff: A number of suppliers now offer electricity tariffs designed specifically for heat pump households.

How We Keep Your Monthly Bills Down

Good design is what separates a cheap heat pump to run from an expensive one. We size every system against the actual heat loss of the property rather than working from floor area alone, and we set flow temperatures as low as your emitters allow.

The AirToHeat Standard:

  • MCS accredited engineers
  • 7-year warranty on every installation
  • Free unlimited technical phone support for performance checks
  • 25% to 40% reduction in heating bills compared to conventional gas systems
