Air Pump Heat Installation

Heat Pump Installation for Bungalows: Key Considerations

Rectangle 8

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are becoming a popular choice for heating British homes efficiently, and bungalows are no exception. With their single-storey layout, bungalows offer some clear advantages when it comes to system design, layout and installation. However, not every property is the same, and a few important factors need careful attention to ensure everything works as it should.

At Air to Heat, we help homeowners across London and the South East install efficient, future-proof heating systems that suit their property. If you live in a bungalow and are thinking about switching to an air source heat pump, here’s what you need to consider.

Space Requirements and Outdoor Unit Placement

Bungalows tend to have more surrounding space than terrace or mid-floor flats, making them a strong match for ASHPs. These systems need a clear area outside to place the pump unit, with good airflow and minimum noise disturbance. A rear or side garden is often ideal.

We always carry out a site visit to confirm there is adequate space for the unit, including safe access and space for maintenance. While outdoor space is usually not an issue with bungalows, we still need to factor in distance to your indoor units and the type of wall surface for fixing pipework.

Heating System Compatibility and Upgrades

Many older bungalows were built with traditional radiators or direct electric heating, which may not be efficient enough for low-temperature systems like heat pumps. To get the best out of your ASHP, you may need larger radiators or underfloor heating that can work well with the lower flow temperatures.

As part of our design process, we check room-by-room heat loss calculations and advise on any upgrade work needed before installation. Some homes also benefit from improved insulation or double glazing to make the most of the heat pump’s output.

Internal Layout and Hot Water Integration

Being single-storey, bungalows usually have fewer stairs, making pipe runs shorter and the system easier to fit. This can also reduce disruption during install. We check cylinder location options, usually in a hallway cupboard or loft, and design the flow from the heat pump accordingly.

If you are replacing a combi boiler, you will also need space for a hot water cylinder. This can be integrated neatly into existing storage areas, and we guide you through cylinder sizing, re-routing pipework, and controls that suit your daily routine.

Planning Rules and Grant Eligibility

In most cases, installing an air source heat pump does not require planning permission for bungalows, as long as the outdoor unit stays within permitted development limits. That said, if you live in a conservation area or your home has listed status, we will help confirm the right steps.

You may also qualify for grant support through schemes such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). We assist with applications and include the grant reduction in our quote, so you can see your actual cost from the start.
