Air Pump Heat Installation

How Much Space Does an Air Source Heat Pump Need?

how much space does an air source heat pump really need

One of the most common questions we get from homeowners is whether they have enough space for an air source heat pump. It is a fair concern, especially if you live in a terraced house or a property with a smaller garden. The good news is that most homes have more than enough room.

Let us walk you through what you actually need.

Outdoor Space for the Heat Pump Unit

The heat pump unit itself sits outside your property, typically mounted on a flat concrete base or wall brackets. Modern units are surprisingly compact. For example, the Vaillant aroTHERM Plus range and Grant Aerona³ models we install have relatively small footprints, often no larger than a standard washing machine.

As a general guide, you should allow for a clear area of around 1 metre by 1 metre for the unit itself. You will also need adequate airflow around the heat pump, so we recommend leaving at least 300mm of clearance on each side and around 500mm at the front where the fan draws in air.

Placement matters too. The unit should be positioned away from bedroom windows where possible, as this helps keep noise to a minimum, even though the models we fit carry Quiet Mark accreditation.

Indoor Space Requirements

Inside your home, you will need room for a hot water cylinder and, depending on the system, a small indoor control unit. If you already have an airing cupboard with a traditional cylinder, this space is usually sufficient. In homes where a combi boiler is being replaced, you may need to find a suitable location for the cylinder, but it does not require a large amount of space.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

In most cases across England and Wales, air source heat pumps fall under permitted development rights. This means you typically do not need formal planning permission, provided the installation meets certain criteria around size, positioning and noise. However, if your property is a listed building or sits within a conservation area, additional checks may apply. We always confirm this during our site survey.

We Handle the Details

At Air To Heat, we carry out a full site assessment before any installation. We measure the available space, check airflow clearances and ensure every system we design meets MCS standards. Whether your home is a compact two-bedroom flat or a large detached property, we will find a solution that works.

If you are unsure whether your home is suitable, get in touch for a free consultation or call us on 0208 936 7639. We are happy to talk it through.
