Air Source Heat Pump Install – Southwark
CASE STUDY
Case Study - Southwark
Unusual Aspect – A key feature of this case study is the installation of a cascade system comprising two heat pumps connected via a low loss header kit. This configuration has been implemented as part of a large-scale extension and refurbishment project, enabling efficient heat distribution and improved system performance across the expanded property. For this installation we also used a Telford Tempest 250L horizontal single coil hot water cylinder instead of our standard vertical cylinders due to space constraints.
Challenges:
- The installation required a long primary pipework run between the external heat pump units and the plant room, spanning three floors, which added complexity to the design and installation process.
- Due to the inclusion of two heat pumps operating as a cascade system, the installation time was expected to be longer than a standard single-unit setup; however, this was carefully managed, and the project was successfully completed within the agreed timeframe.
- The inclusion of two air source heat pumps operating in a cascade system required more advanced design considerations to ensure both units worked efficiently together without imbalance or short cycling. A low loss header and volumizer were installed to provide hydraulic separation, ensuring stable flow rates and improved system control.
- The plant room was located below ground level under the main entrance stairwell, making access and installation more difficult. Installation was carefully sequenced and coordinated to safely transport materials and complete works within the confined space
